Four Ferrari 340 Americas lined up on the 1951 Le Mans starting grid. Chassis S/N 0120A was one of them, carrying number 18. Along its rich history, the car's original windshield was lost. The client wanted the car returned to exactly the shape it raced at Le Mans.
Measurements and documentation from one of the three sister chassis that shared that starting grid provided the reference needed to establish correct proportions and period accuracy. Using a 7-axis laser scanner provided by one of our partners, the surface of the hand-built aluminium coachwork was mapped to ensure contour and fitment were exact. The base was 5-axis milled from solid ash.
The second part of the project was digital. Working directly alongside the car, a full 3D model of the 340 America was developed from scratch, capturing the surface quality of the original coachwork with as much accuracy as the reference material allowed.
